Oil Spill

I am starting another painting for the Contrasts series. It’s already lightly sketched out on the 3″ x 4″ canvas. This one takes an oil bottle which might be used to hold olive oil or salad dressing and tips it over. the mess spills over the edges of the surface to the edge of the canvas. A few napkins will lie uselessly in the spreading mess. I hope to use this as a broader analogy to waste, consumption and the dirty business of oil drilling. I also hope to make these big ideas a little smaller by bringing them into a more domestic environment.
I haven’t a defined sketch for this one like I do for so many others however, I have sketched out the oil bottle and played a bit with the lighting and color. Here is one in gouache on paper.
